OMODHOS
In the heart
of the vine country, Omodhos
has been a major contributor to the Cyprus wine industry.
Omodhos carries the oldest grape pressing method of
wine making on the island – The Linos. The Omodites
keep themselves occupied with growing various types
of fruit and they also make the traditional ring shaped
dried bread – arkateno, as well as grapes, marmalade,
palouze and siousioukko. The village was founded towards
the end of the Byzantine
era or the beginning of the Frankish Rule in the
island. There are numerous rumours regarding the name
of Omodhos, some say it comes from the Frankish
name Homodeus, whereas the locals may also tell
you that it is derived from the ‘modo’ take
it easy.
