MOSAICS
The town of Paphos
on the west coast of Cyprus
is famous for its beautiful mosaics. These were originally
laid in the 3rd century as floors for Roman nobles.
After excavations the first of the mosaics were uncovered
in 1962 most of which are dedicated to Dionysus.
Another mosaic worth seeing is that at the church of
Panagia
Angeloktistos. The mosaic is of the virgin and child
with the archangels Gabriel
and Michael. It is one of seven 6th
Century Byzantine religious mosaics left in the
Orthodox world.
